Training Margret
Margret’s training began with a rubber band fight. My other
friend was there, and we were chatting as we kept escalating it. Now we started
“fencing “ with broomsticks…Last famous words, “ok, take a swing, with
everything ya got…take aim at my head, tho”…
How funny those things will eventually come full circle…
It’s been almost 15 yrs since. As time went on, I decided
to teach her the martial arts. I always felt that teaching JKD was too complex
to do so in a casual settling where the training would be infrequent and far in
between sessions. I decided to start with the stuff I could remember where we
last left off. Not to say that karate is easy, no. it took me many years to get
through it, but it is one of those things I could set bookmarks in my head to
continue or refer back to a particular lesson. We tried karate for a long time.
Along the way through JKD she has found Escrima. We do pick
up sparring usually at the end of the day, after our last P/T client leaves.
Full contact Escrima, with no protective gear is brutal.
Just ask the Dog brothers…
She found her own way back to JKD. Most people are not
willing to travel that long, just to find another path to take. She calls it,
"the 15 year punch"....

Marie
Began learning martial arts at the age of 12 with a neighbor who
taught out of their garage. Her formal training began with Professor Hyman, in NYC.
There, she learned Karate and later she re
joined the same dojo, twice as an adult. She began with Shotokan
karate, then began studying the other styles, IE. Ryu and TKD. Her father
had been an amateur
boxer back in the 1950's as his own sports preference; began exposing
her
to the discipline that comes with learning and training. In
the late 70's as Marie joined the service, She met Sifu Brown; who had
just received his instructorship in Jeet Kune Do, from Guru Inosanto.
Marie & Sifu Brown both worked together in the late night shift as MP
supervisors, and used the idle time to teach/learn during 2 tours of
duty overseas.
In 1981, Marie was introduced to Master Drayton, a 5th
generation instructor that had been assigned to her, as a last resort by
the doctor who was treating her for severe chronic pain from a parachute
accident. She learned Qi Gong, Baguazhan and Tai-Chi Chuan (Wu family style).
In 1983 Marie was certified by The International
Kung Fu Federation and the International Martial Arts Federation
for her grasp of the healing forms of Tai Chi. In 1985, she obtained a 3rd
degree in Chinese Goju, with the Black Dragon association group
while serving in Fort Benning,
Ga.
Since the early 90's, Marie continued taking short courses and
developing her form, Quan Ji, while patrolling with the NYPD for 5
years. She Obtained her certification as a Kickboxing instructor while
pursuing her career as a Physical Fitness Instructor, for which she
has been in private practice for the past decade. |
